Purpose. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of secondary education institutions in the southern states of Algeria, as this region faces unique challenges. By applying Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to assess efficiency, the study aims to help in resource allocation and the development of improvement strategies.
Results. The study used a model with three inputs (the number of teachers, the number of high schools, and the number of pupils) and one output variable (the number of successful baccalaureate graduates). The results revealed marked differences in resource efficiency across states, with secondary schools in the southern states of Algeria demonstrating high levels of efficiency in terms of quantitative outcomes such as the number of successful undergraduate students. Findings showed variations in technical efficiency across secondary education institutions, with an average efficiency score of approximately 0.848. Biskra was identified as the most efficient and referenced state, while the analysis highlighted unused input resources: 10.35% for the number of pupils, 12.12% for the number of teachers, and 15.29% in school infrastructure.
Scientific novelty. This study is unique in applying DEA to analyse efficiency in secondary education institutions in Algeria’s southern states. By identifying specific resource inefficiencies and assessing technical efficiency, it proposes a new approach to addressing regional disparities in education quality within Algeria.
Practical value. The findings provide valuable insights for academic leaders and policymakers, highlighting areas for improvement in resource use within secondary education. The results have practical implications for designing targeted interventions, improving the efficiency of educational resource allocation, and informing policies aimed at enhancing the overall performance of secondary education in Algeria’s southern states.
